Privilege Ibiza

With a capacity of 10,000, Privilege is in the Guinness Book of Records as being the world’s biggest club. It has also been the home

of Manumission for the last decade. Situated near San Rafael, on the road that links Ibiza Town and San Antonio, the club is an awesome sight and experience.

History

To say that Privilege has had a colourful history would be a massive understatement. It all started out innocently enough as a

community swimming pool in the 60s, popular with both residents and families on holiday. Then in the late 70s it all started to

change when the club was taken over by three Basques. One of their them was footballer Jose Antonio Santamaria. The name of the club was changed to Ku after the nighterie the owners already owned in San Sebastian.  Soon, the odd party after the pool had closed grew steadily before becoming a fully fledged club in its own right.

The 80s were a mad time for Ku. It fast became known as a club where anything goes, a club full of wildly dressed transvestites and the like. In 1987 Queen's Freddie Mercury dueted Montserrat Caballe for a TV show broadcast round the world from the club.  James Brown and Grace Jones also visited.

In 1990 a roof was added because of new Balearic laws but just a year later this roof collapsed during a storm.  After it was refurbished it reopened in 1994 under its new name, Privilege.

Manumission then came along in 1996 and the club had a new lease of life.

Location

On the road between Ibiza and San Antonio, not far from Amnesia.

Music Policy

Like most venues in Ibiza it depends on the promoter on the given night. It can range from harder, faster sounds of techno and trance to happy clappy house.  Manumission has now left the club (to go to Amnesia) but Tiesto now has a night there which means hi-energy trance and house.

Inside Privilege

The first thing that hits you upon entry to Privilege is the size of the place, it’s huge! If it's your first time there its very likely you will get lost and separated from your mates, especially after a drink or two.  The main room is massive, with the DJ box suspended above a large swimming pool. At the back of the club is a stage where the dancers perform. There's several other rooms throughout the club including the ‘music box’ room, the VIP room and a multi tiered chill-out area with sofas and palm trees.

Stories are often heard of people losing their friends and not seeing them all night, and it’s easy to see why.  Those of you who want to take snaps of the worlds biggest club may struggle - you aren’t allowed to take a camera in with you unless you arrange it with them beforehand.

Prices

You may have to queue so buy tickets beforehand if possible.

The prices can range from between €20-50. There are often free tickets in Ibiza Town and San Antonio for the lesser known promoters' nights.  Drink prices are around €10 (£7) for a beer, €12 (£8.40) for a spirit + mixer, and €8 (£5.50) for water.
