Amnesia Ibiza

Amnesia is one of Ibiza’s best loved and most popular clubs. It has been the home for many years to the likes of Cocoon, La Troya and Cream.

History
The house where Amnesia now stands was built at the end of the 18th century. Sold to an aristocratic and artistic widow in the 70s it became a home to hippies who played in bands and danced till dawn while experimenting with LSD and "touching the heavens", according to the Amnesia web site.

In 1976 the new tennant Antonio Escohotado turned the house into a discotheque and named it Amnesia.  It became Ibiza’s first open air club (it has since got a roof).

The club played a big part in the creation of the dance scene as we know it. It was 1987 when four young British holidaymakers ended up in Amnesia, took an ecstasy pill, and were captivated by the music being played by resident Alfredo. These four blokes were Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling, Nicky Holloway and Johnny Walker. So inspired were they that they took the sound back to the UK in clubs they ran such as ‘Shoom’ and ‘Spectrum’. The ‘Summer of Love’ followed the year later, Acid House was born and the rest, as they say, is history.

The club is popular with the local Spanish

It has greatly expanded over the years and now has a capacity of 4-5,000 at least.

Location

Half way between Ibiza and San Antonio on the main road

Music

When the previously open air venue obtained a roof, Amnesia promoters lost the air of freedom but gained volume. All the successful promoters that inhabit it today have taken advantage of the ability of the sound system to fill every corner of the room with physical waves of sound.

From the sonic innovations of Cocoon's techno-tastic Monday nighter to the euphoric rushes of Cream, it's music made to be felt as much as heard. Typically it's housier on the terrace and more banging in the sala principal.

The nights, and music, vary greatly from night to night; perhaps more so than in any other club on the island. At Cream expect to find the world’s best Trance DJs; whilst if Techno’s more your thing, then best go to Cocoon. Then there’s the flamboyance of the gay night La Troya, the quality House of Made In Italy and the mad mad foam parties on Sunday.

Inside

The main room has a huge dancefloor, great sound system and - two massive "ice cannons" which blast at regular intervals nearly knocking you off your feet!

One of the big nights at Amnesia are the Espuma parties where suffocating amounts of foam are pumped onto the dance floor in the main room. It’s a crazy party where you will get soaked in foam so don’t go wearing your best clothes!

Prices

Entrance to the big nights at Amnesia like Cream and Cocoon can be in the region of €50 (£35), though, like all of the clubs, you will be able to get cheaper with a flyer. The prices for some of the lesser known nights can be as low as €20 (£14). Drinks prices are pretty much same as the other big clubs so you are looking at around €10 (£7) for a beer, €12 (£8.40) for a spirit + mixer, and €8 (£5.50) for water.  The bars upstairs are more expensive.

Amnesia is popular with all nationalities. The nights at the club are varied and crazy, and there’s a true mental hedonistic vibe throughout. Pure Ibiza.
